So I’m off to Italy in 20 days to carry out the research for my dissertation project that I will be writing up over the coming 6/7 months. I’m travelling with two other undergraduate students, who are carrying out similar research to me.
The image above shows a fraction of the stuff I will be taking out with me, including two laptops, a soil pH meter, a USB2000 UV spectrometer amongst other scientific instruments. Most of this has to go into my hand luggage as it is so expensive and crucial to my research. Getting it through airport security is going to be a nightmare! I also have all my clothes and other essentials that have to go into a massive backpack due to the amount of walking we’ll be doing. It’s going to be hard work!
We leave on June 11th, flying to Naples at 7am. We have the day in Naples to explore and then we get an overnight ferry to the island of Vulcano. I will be based here until the 16th, carrying out research into the atmospheric sulfur dioxide content, emitted by the volcanic regions on the island. I will also be examining soil quality and investigating the acidifying effect of sulfur dioxide on plant species.
On the 16th, we get a ferry over to Sicily, where we travel to Nicolosi in the East of the island. This is where we are based until June 21st, carrying out further experiments on Mt. Etna centred around similar principles as on Vulcano. Then we fly home, via Dusseldorf and get back to Heathrow 9pm on the 21st.
I can’t wait for this trip as I finally get to carry out research that I have been planning for the whole of this semester. Massive appreciation to the University of Sheffield for funding this project.
I will do my best to keep you guys updated as I travel around!
What is happening to our world? We are no longer safe on our own streets. Our servicemen and women are the targets of these tyrants.
We need to do something.
They tried to behead him. To take his head as a trophy.
This is why I will become a Royal Marine.
We do not fear you.
You will never break us.
We are humanity. We are morals. We are life.
You attack us in our cities. In our homes.
We stand united and we will honour the lives you have taken from us.
People are taking the piss out of you everyday. They butt into your life, take a cheap shot at you and then disappear. They leer at you from tall buildings and make you feel small. They make flippant comments from buses that imply you’re not sexy enough and that all the fun is happening somewhere else. They are on TV making your girlfriend feel inadequate. They have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. They are The Advertisers and they are laughing at you.
You, however, are forbidden to touch them. Trademarks, intellectual property rights and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity.
Fuck that. Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. It’s yours to take, re-arrange and re-use. You can do whatever you like with it. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.
You owe the companies nothing. Less than nothing, you especially don’t owe them any courtesy. They owe you. They have re-arranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked for your permission, don’t even start asking for theirs."
